Picture this.

You've booked your dream portrait session on the sun-kissed shores of Playa del Carmen. The date is circled on your calendar, and visions of stunning photos against turquoise waters dance in your head. But have you considered how our unique tropical climate might affect your session? No cap—I've got you covered with everything you need to know to look and feel your best under the Riviera Maya sun.

The Playa del Carmen Weather Reality Check

Let's address the elephant (or should I say, the sweaty tourist) in the room: Playa del Carmen is HOT. And humid. Like, "my phone camera instantly fogs up" humid. As someone who's photographed hundreds of sessions here, I've seen it all—from makeup meltdowns to those main character moment downpours that arrive and disappear within minutes.

Our average temperatures hover between 75-85°F (24-29°C) year-round, but during summer months, that thermometer can climb past 90°F (32°C). Add in humidity levels that frequently reach 85%, and you've got yourself what I affectionately call "nature's free spa treatment." (It's giving sauna, but make it fashion.)

Timing Is Everything: When to Schedule Your Session

Golden hour magic

There's a reason photographers worldwide are obsessed with the hour after sunrise and before sunset. The vibes? Immaculate. Here in Playa, the golden light hits different—casting a warm glow that's basically a built-in filter for everyone while keeping temperatures somewhat manageable.

Early Bird Special

For families with young children (or anyone who just can't with the heat), I strongly recommend morning sessions. The 7-9 AM window offers beautiful light with temperatures that won't leave you looking like you just finished hot girl walk: extreme edition.

Sunset Session

Starting about 90 minutes before sunset gives us perfect lighting conditions and usually more comfortable temperatures. Plus, you can celebrate afterward with a well-deserved margarita! It's called self-care, look it up.

Weather Window Shopping

May through November marks our rainy season, but don't let that scare you! Typical rain patterns here involve short, intense afternoon showers that clear quickly. I always keep a backup date or time option during these months, just in case Mother Nature decides to be extra.

Styling is everything.

Dress for success (and comfort!)

The eternal question: "What should we wear?" In Playa del Carmen, this question comes with some climate-specific considerations...

Fabric Choices Matter

Natural, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, and light silk are your best friends here. That gorgeous polyester 'fit? It will turn into a personal sauna faster than you can say "core memory."

Layering Lightweight Pieces

Consider bringing a light, neutral layer that can be added or removed. This not only gives variety to your photos but allows you to adjust to temperature changes as the sun sets. We love a versatile moment.

The Sweat Factor

Dark colors show sweat more easily, as do solid gray and certain blues. Consider this when selecting your outfit, or bring a backup option if you're concerned. The struggle is real, but the photos don't have to show it.

Beach-Specific Wardrobe Hacks

For beach sessions, flowy dresses and loose linens not only look gorgeous on camera but allow for air circulation. For guys, rolled-up linen pants and untucked shirts create that relaxed yet refined beach aesthetic we're all chasing on the feed.

A Little Secret

I always keep a small portable fan and cooling towels in my photography bag for clients. Don't be shy about taking a cool-down break—these little moments often result in genuine laughter and some of my favorite candid shots! Your comfort > everything else.

Hair and Makeup: Tropical Edition

Our humidity presents unique challenges for hair and makeup. Here's how to ensure both stay camera-ready:

Humidity-Proof Hair

Whatever your hair type, the humidity here will find a way to surprise you. For those with straight hair, a light anti-humidity serum works wonders. For curly hair, embrace the volume but bring a small smoothing product for touch-ups. Living your best frizz-free life is the goal.

The "Less is More" Makeup Approach

Heavy foundation will slide in our climate faster than you can say "TikTok made me buy it." Consider a tinted moisturizer with SPF instead, cream blushes instead of powder (which can cake in humidity), and waterproof mascara and eyeliner as non-negotiables.

Local Beauty Pros

While I advocate for natural beauty and will always suggest to go as natural as you can, I have a network of local hair and makeup artists who specialize in creating photo-ready looks that withstand our climate, so feel free to ask and we'll find the best fit to work with. Investing in professional styling gives you one less thing to worry about and often makes a dramatic difference in your photos. Trust the process—they understand the assignment.

The Hydration Situation

Dehydration is the silent photoshoot saboteur. When you're dehydrated:

  • Your skin looks less plump and radiant
  • You're more likely to feel fatigued or irritable
  • Minor discomforts feel magnified

Start hydrating extra well 48 hours before your session. I always bring cold water bottles to sessions, but having your own is also recommended. For morning sessions, avoid excessive alcohol the night before (I know, you're on vacation, but trust me on this one!). Hydration check? Passed.

Sun Protection That Won't Ruin Your Photos

Nothing says "souvenir from Mexico" quite like a lobster-red sunburn or awkward tan lines in your portraits. Yet many sunscreens can create a white cast in photos or transfer onto clothing. Not the vibe we're going for.

The Photographer-Approved Approach:

Apply a high-SPF, photo-friendly sunscreen at least 30 minutes before your session

Bring a mineral-based powder sunscreen for touch-ups that won't disturb makeup

Consider sun-protective clothing for before and after your session

For extended outdoor sessions, we'll incorporate natural shade opportunities

The Bug Situation: Not Cute in Photos

Depending on the season and location of your session, mosquitoes and other insects might make unwelcome appearances. While I can edit out the occasional bug bite, coming prepared is much easier:

Bug Battle Plan:

  • Apply unscented insect repellent before arriving (scented products attract different bugs!)
  • Consider lightweight long sleeves/pants for dawn or dusk sessions near gardens or jungle areas
  • I keep eco-friendly bug repellent in my bag for touch-ups

Bugs are literally the crashers nobody asked for, so let's keep them out of your photo session.

The Mental Prep: Embracing Playa's Perfectly Imperfect Nature

Here's my best advice after years of tropical photography: embrace the unexpected! Some of my most magical portraits have happened when:

  • A brief shower created dramatic skies and left us with a rainbow (main character energy)
  • Wind tousled hair in ways no stylist could replicate (we love a natural moment)
  • A few drops of sweat made skin glow with that coveted "dewy" look
  • Humidity added natural volume to flat hair (living for the bounce)

The beauty of Playa del Carmen comes with its own charming challenges. The clients who embrace these elements rather than fight them always end up with the most authentic, joyful portraits. It's giving "go with the flow" energy, and I'm here for it.
